This year the festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Latvia, and a youth competition of Latvian cinema will be held for the first time in the history of the festival.
MANHATTAN SHORT is the only event of its kind. More than 100,000 film lovers around the world, for 1 week, unite in cinemas, museums, libraries and universities with one goal - to watch and vote for the 10 films selected for the festival.
MANHATTAN SHORT has announced the final ten short films of the worldwide events, which are shown simultaneously around the world, and the awards for Best Film and Best Actor are determined by the voting of each participating viewer. Based on the results of the MANHATTAN SHORT voting, each short film automatically receives the opportunity to participate in the selection for the "Oscar" award. Many past MANHATTAN SHORT finalists have been nominated for Oscars, films such as “Real” and “White Eye” to name a few.
This year's MANHATTAN SHORT final was made up of ten finalists from eight countries: Scotland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Australia, Finland and Lebanon, as well as two films each from France and the United States. A grandiose program has been announced for the 10th anniversary year of the film festival in Latvia. The films touch on a surprising number of topics, from superhuman abilities to overcoming obstacles in relationships with a father or partner. They will reveal world-famous events, like September 11, from the other side - through the view of a participant in the incident. They will reveal a way to avoid judgmental views, social or economic hierarchy. They will draw parallels between the protesting freedom fighters and the younger generation.
In the film "Don VS Lightning" we will see the famous actor Peter Mullan, who could be seen in the popular Netflix series "Wild West". The short film "Free Fall" is based on an excerpt from the book "Swimming with Sharks" by the Dutch writer Joris Luyendijk, which tells how the financial world works. Some films are the personal experience of directors and screenwriters or are based on real events. Film lovers will be given emotional pleasure and a journey to various funny or dramatic life moments.
The results of the competition will be announced on October 3, 2022 at a ceremony in New York and then published on the ManhattanShort.com website.
